## Overview

Expenses live on each client. Open a client, go to the commercial tab, and open expenses to record costs and see them by project.

## Add an expense

- Amount and currency (the workspace currency is the default).
- The date the cost occurred, a description, and notes.
- An optional project from the same client.
- A billable flag, on by default, for costs the client should cover.

## Example: A load-testing service for Northstar

You pay for a load-testing service to check the portal before launch. Open Northstar Health Labs, go to the commercial tab, and add the expense with its amount, date, and "Load test before launch", linked to the Patient portal launch project. Leave it marked billable. When you prepare the July invoice, you see it listed and add a matching line item.

## Review expenses

Filter the list by project, and edit or delete entries you have access to manage.

## Expenses and invoices

Billable expenses are a signal for invoice review. They are not added to invoice drafts automatically; add a line item when you want to bill a cost.

## FAQ

### Are billable expenses added to invoices automatically?

No. They're a reminder during invoice review. Add a line item to the invoice when you want to bill the cost.
